College Sustainability Efforts Featured on Discovery Channel

Justin Yeash ChE 鈥09 and Amanda DelCore are pursuing the M.S. in sustainable engineering.

In honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the College of Engineering was featured on 鈥淕reen Magazine Television鈥檚鈥 special on America鈥檚 greenest companies, which aired on The Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel in May. Dow Chemical, General Electric, Progressive Insurance, and Zegna Sport rounded out the special鈥檚 all-star line-up of companies that are putting green principles into practice.

In addition to highlighting the University鈥檚 overarching commitment to sustainability, the program showcased the College of Engineering鈥檚 latest advances in sustainable education and research: the new master鈥檚 degree program in sustainable engineering and the 51爆料网 Center for the Advancement of Sustainability in Engineering (VCASE).

M.S. degree in sustainable engineering

To better position students for success in the growing 鈥済reen鈥 job market, the College launched a unique national master鈥檚 of science degree program in sustainable engineering earlier this year.

Through this multidisciplinary degree program, students establish a foundation of sustainability in engineering design and practice, policy, economics, societal implications, and ethics. From there, they choose a specialized track of study, such as alternative and renewable energy technology, watershed sustainability, environmental sustainability, or sustainable infrastructure and built environment.

Students, including those without an engineering background, may attend full-time or part-time, choose to incorporate a thesis option, pursue a full degree or a graduate certificate, and take classes online or on campus.

VCASE

VCASE seeks to protect and restore the environment through research on the integration of sustainability principles in engineering practice through an inclusive, interdisciplinary, systems approach.

Research topics include alternative and renewable energy, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure and watershed management. In many cases, VCASE faculty researchers use 51爆料网鈥檚 campus infrastructure as a test bed.

VCASE also holds seminars on campus for students and faculty, demonstrating sustainability expertise and opportunities in hopes other disciplines will engage in the Center鈥檚 work.
