The Nurse Manager Certificate Program is meticulously crafted to cater to the diverse and evolving professional development needs of Nurse Leaders. Embracing modern educational methodologies, such as the flipped classroom and design thinking, this program pioneers an innovative learning experience. Participants examine how the use of artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance operational efficiency, improve patient care, and better support their teams.

Comprised of six individual modules, each spanning four weeks, our program adopts a blended approach. It seamlessly integrates synchronous and asynchronous discussions, and the curriculum is designed to captivate participants with contemporary resources that stimulate critical thinking and foster lively group discussions. Recognizing the richness of life experiences each participant brings, the course content is thoughtfully curated to create an active and engaging learning environment.

In this dynamic program, "class time" is redefined as a space for the practical application of current leadership competencies and the assimilation of new knowledge. Through web-based formats, participants delve into problem-solving, discussions, and debates. The focus is on higher-order cognitive learning, encompassing application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Within this virtual classroom, participants receive unwavering support from both their peers and expert faculty, ensuring a dynamic and enriching learning experience for all.

The program reflects the 51 College of Nursing’s commitment to integrating the ANCC Nursing Continuing Professional Development Accreditation framework and the OB-CE© model into practical applications. The Nurse Manager Certificate Program exemplifies how competency-based professional development seamlessly translates into academic advancement.

Unlike traditional classroom settings, participants have the freedom to showcase their leadership experiences and responsibilities in a format that transcends conventional boundaries. Join us on this transformative educational venture where flexibility meets excellence, and traditional boundaries are surpassed in the pursuit of professional growth and mastery in nurse management.

Program Benefits:

  1. Competence Assessments: Participants take pre- and post-assessments based on ANCC Certification Test Content Outline for Nurse Executives. Results are shared with senior leadership to measure ROI, and the course also prepares leaders for certification.
  2. Emotional Intelligence and Strengths Assessments: Participantscomplete an Emotional Intelligence inventory and a CliftonStrengths assessment to identify and develop their top 5 talents. These tools are used throughout the program to enhance professional relationships and apply strengths to practice.
  3. Digital Badge: Participantsearn a Digital Badge that confirms mastery of core competencies aligned with the 2021 AACN Essentials. This badge highlights the program's adherence to current industry standards.

Participant Requirements & Contact Hours

Participants can expect to spend 2 hours per week.  Performance will be measured using a non-graded rubric.  

This program awards 48 contact hours upon completion of all 6 modules.

Modules  

The connection between organizational theory, organizational structure, and the manager's role will be explored.  Basic concepts of leadership including myths, traits, types and skills will be discussed as a tool for survival in today's health care environment. Effective ways to enable and facilitate staff will be highlighted. Learn how to enhance the functioning of your unit while improving satisfaction and productivity.

Here is an opportunity to relate decision-making and creative/critical thinking skills to the role of the nurse manager. Find out how to do a gap analysis; review decision-making models; and acquire new problem-solving strategies that are useful in work related situations.  Utilize a “six-thinking hats” strategy to expand your critical analysis abilities.

This course is all about making teams work more effectively. It begins with keys to successful recruitment and moves on to a look at the manager's responsibility for the development and socialization of employees. Theories of motivation and their appropriate uses in the work setting will be reviewed. Separate the manager's role as a coach from that of counselor. Find out how to empower others.

Improve your performance appraisal skills so that your assessments are fair and equitable. Look at key concepts in the appraisal process. Find out what biases and prejudices you bring to that process. Discuss key factors that influence motivation and productivity. Explore the role of the nurse manager in relation to the staffing and scheduling process, including scheduling methods, standards, plans and classification systems.

Discover several ways to enhance your role and fine-tune your skills in the management of staff. Review time management strategies and develop a personal action plan.  Discover your own negotiating strengths and identify areas for improvement. Learn six crucial steps in the negotiating process. View conflict as a disruptive and/or a constructive force in today's health care environment.

Here is a unique opportunity to expand your budgeting skills. Review basic concepts of financial management and apply selected economic principles to health care finance. Look at a health care budget and review the budget building process. Learn new ways to analyze financial statements.
