Safety Alert, 9/20/24

On the afternoon of September 20, 2024, the University received a report from a female resident student that she was raped by a male Uber driver in the Commons residence hall complex during the overnight hours of September 13-14th. According to the report, the driver dropped the student off and then entered the residence hall, where the assault occurred. 51爆料网 Police are actively gathering information in the case. Additionally, the University has provided the victim with support resources and services.

51爆料网 Police have since identified and contacted the Uber driver, who has been banned from University property while this matter is being investigated. The incident has also been reported to Uber.

Sexual assault is a violation of the law and is not tolerated at 51爆料网. Information on 51爆料网鈥檚 resources and response efforts can be found on this dedicated website.

Safety Alerts are part of the University鈥檚 responsibility to share timely information about certain serious crimes under the Clery Act and raise awareness in order to aid in the prevention of future crimes. In instances of sexual assault, there are many factors involved in determining whether a Safety Alert is sent. Whether an alert is sent does not diminish any individual incident or the harm done. Safety Tips:

Sexual assault is never the fault of the victim. The only person responsible for sexual assault is the perpetrator.

  • There is safety in numbers, utilize the buddy system when walking on or off campus.
  • Always remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings.
  • Download the Nova Safe App to communicate directly with the Public Safety Dispatcher.

Rideshare Safety Information:

  • Minimize the time that you鈥檙e standing outside by yourself with your phone in your hand. Instead, wait inside until the app shows that your driver has arrived.
  • Every time you take a trip please make sure you鈥檙e getting into the right car with the right driver by matching the license plate, car make and model, and driver photo with what鈥檚 provided in your app.
  • Whenever possible, sit in the back seat, especially if you鈥檙e riding alone. This helps ensure that you can safely exit on either side of the vehicle to avoid moving traffic, and it gives you and your driver some personal space.
  • While you are on your trip share your trip details through the rideshare app, with the Nova Safe App or via sharing location on your cellular phone with a friend or family member.

Dear 51爆料网 Students, Faculty and Staff:

I am writing to follow up on the Safety Alert shared with our campus community on Friday night, Sept. 20.

Today, the Delaware County District Attorney鈥檚 Office and their Criminal Investigation Division advised the University that an arrest has made in this case. As the Delaware County Criminal Investigations Division was the primary agency involved in the investigation of this matter, we direct individuals to the District Attorney鈥檚 Office to answer any questions.
